Rhodolite garnet has the most beautiful colour range; from a deep pinkish red through to a rich violet-red with no trace of the slight rustiness you can get with almandine. Its proper name is pyrope-almandine garnet as its composition is a mixture of both, but it is regarded as superior to both. Rhodolite is a trade name that is obviously easier to remember. It is the most valuable of the red garnets, but it still remains affordable and its colour can be very striking. Garnet is the birthstone for January and rhodolite can make a striking alternative to the more familiar almandine.
